Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease of multifactorial origin that causes progressive and irreversible deterioration of the sight as a result of injury of the optic nerve. The main risk factor for glaucoma, for both development and progression, is the increase in intraocular pressure (IOP).
Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness in developed countries (after diabetes), so early diagnosis before the loss of the visual field appears is very important.
Treatment of glaucoma
The aim of the treatment of glaucoma is to stop the progression of the disease, but it does not manage to recover the visual field that has already been loss. The initial treatment of choice is always the medical treatment with the administration of topical eye drops. If this does not manage to control the pressure, the doctor will recommend a treatment with laser, and even surgery.
